Dictionary entries break the 400,000 barrier (July)

After a period of consolidation, which mainly involved deleting and correcting entries called into question in the Wrong Entry forum, and thanks to the incorporation of a substantial glossary, we finally reached another landmark: the LEO dictionary now contains over 400,000 entries! Many thanks to all our users who have contributed not only to making LEO bigger, but also to enhancing the quality of the dictionary.

Launch of our (February)

After the long wait we finally dare to present our second dictionary to the world. Please keep in mind that the new dictionary is still in its fledgling stages and there are quite a few things that still need to be done: the French nouns aren't consistently marked with their gender, we still have a large number of words awaiting inclusion, and some Web pages relevant to the dictionary aren't translated into French yet. In spite of these shortcomings, we hope that the 'dico' will be of help to you.
Along with the dictionary, we established a French forum - may we ask you to keep some restraint in suggesting new entries, as we would like to integrate the vocabulary we have in stock first.
And now have fun with the 'dico' that is looked after by our new colleague Michaela Scherer.

Dictionary's Vocabulary Trainer at (January)

Many of our users have expressed the desire for a way of revising and learning the entries in the dictionary, and now, after a lengthy developmental period, we are able to fulfil this wish at last: You can now select entries on the query results page and transfer them to your own personal vocabulary pool. You can also divide your saved words into a number of self-defined units and test yourself on them in various ways.
For a short period, during which we intend to incorporate feedback, the dictionary with its integrated vocabulary trainer can be found at , where you will also find our usage hints. Later on, this will revert to the usual address 'http://dict.leo.org'.

Start of German-French Dictionary anticipated by mid-February (January/November)

Since the task of responding to the avalanche of requests for a German-French counterpart to the existing dictionary has become as time-consuming as actually setting one up, we have, after much deliberation, opted for the latter alternative :-) This has primarily been made possible by cooperation with Leinhäuser und Partner Fachübersetzungen, who have provided us with a start-up vocabulary of approx. 150,000 entries.

Posting Queries via Short Message Service (November)

As of today, we are able to offer the possibility of posting queries to LEO's dictionary via text message, a first step towards accessing the dictionary offline - other alternatives (such as WAP) are in the pipeline. This new form of access has been made possible thanks to cooperation with burdawireless.

German pronunciation (October)

LEO has joined forces with and is now able to offer users the opportunity to listen to the pronunciation of almost all German words and phrases in the dictionary in the form of audio files (WAV format) via the -links. The pronunciation is generated by the ATIP's speech synthesis software PROSER.

Online survey "Perspektive-Deutschland" (October)

After having supported the second Perspektive-Deutschland survey two years ago, LEO is now sponsoring the third part of the "world's biggest sociopolitical online survey". The initiative under the patronage of Richard von Weizsäcker, retired Federal President, has the motto New perspectives for Germany.
